What changed in October

• Blinkit added the most stores: 148, or 41% of the month's net growth. 88 of them were outside the big metros.
• Flipkart Minutes came second with 104 more stores, about 40 of its new ones in Delhi NCR.
• Zepto added 62 (64 new, 2 closed), Swiggy Instamart 26 and BigBasket 18 (20 new, 2 closed).
• 363 stores joined the count (351 of them seen for the first time ever), in 151 cities; 197 of them outside the 15 largest cities. 5 stores were confirmed closed after a second reading on another day.
• 33 cities got their first store in our survey, among them Nalgonda, Ballia, Beawar, Shahdol, Guna, Tezpur, Godhra and Churu.
• Uttar Pradesh added the most stores of any state (49 new). Among cities, Delhi (32 new), Bangalore (29) and Hyderabad (20) led.
• The largest networks by city: Bangalore 806 stores, Delhi 593, Hyderabad 513, Chennai 390 and Mumbai 388, across Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart Minutes and BigBasket.
• 6,766 of the 7,388 stores (92%) are placed at a measured pin; the rest by their service area.

How to read these numbers

We read every store of each app again each month from its own public store-locator information, on the same grid as September. "New" means first seen in our survey, not opened that month: for Blinkit, 58 of the 148 have a store id above September's highest, so they are certainly new, and 132 are likely new. A store counts as closed only when a second reading on another day also finds it nowhere. Amazon Now and JioMart are counted separately from these dark stores. Full method.
